What Happens When You Have Phase Issues in the Low Frequency Range
The low end is a part of music production these days. It does not matter what kind of music you make, like techno or hip hop or pop. The sub frequencies are what give your track its power and energy. A clean low end can make your mix sound really big and professional.. A messy one can make it sound bad.
One of the reasons the low end gets messy is because of something called phase cancellation. This is when two sounds do not work together. Every producer and mix engineer needs to know about this.
The sub range is usually between 20 Hz and 60 Hz. This is where the deep sub energy is. Then there is 60 Hz to 120 Hz, which's the bass body and punch. These frequencies are very powerful. They have waveforms and take up a lot of headroom. The low end can get messy quickly.
The problem is that our ears are not very good at hearing problems in the end. Sometimes the bass sounds good in your headphones. It does not sound good on a big sound system. This is because of phase issues.
A clean sub means the bass sounds controlled and powerful. The low frequencies are not fighting each other. The kick and bass work together. The low end sounds good on speakers. There is headroom for mastering. The stereo image is stable and focused.
When the sub range is clean the whole track sounds bigger. Even if the mix is not very loud it still sounds big.
Phase is about how two waveforms work. When they work well together they sound stronger.. When they do not work well together they can cancel each other out. This is very noticeable in the end.
For example a 50 Hz wave is very long. If two bass sounds are not perfectly in sync they can cancel each other out. This means that by making your mix sound louder they can make it sound weaker.
Let's say you have two sounds playing together. If they are in sync they sound louder and stronger.. If they are not in sync they sound weaker.
You can think of it like two waves. If they are moving together they sound good.. If they are moving against each other they do not sound good.
Many producers use too many bass sounds. They stack them on top of each other. But if these sounds are not in sync they can fight each other.
The kick drum and bassline often played at the same time. If they are not in sync the kick can get lost. The mix can sound muddy.
If you have a stereo bass sound it can sound good in headphones.. It can sound bad on a big sound system. Many sound systems play the end in mono. If the left and right channels are not the same the bass can get lost.
If you use the EQ you can introduce phase shifts. This can make the low end sound weak.
If you use too many effects on the bass it can sound bad. The low end does not like many effects.
You may have phase issues if the bass sounds different on speakers.. If the low end gets lost when you play it in mono.. If the kick does not have much impact.
A low end is important for a few reasons. First it sounds good everywhere. Whether you play it on a sound system or on your phone it sounds good.
Second, it gives you headroom. This means you can make your mix louder and clearer.
Third, it makes the groove and punch of the track sound better. When the kick and bass are in sync the track sounds more powerful.
Instead of using a lot of bass sounds use just one or two. This can make the low end sound bigger and more powerful.
