HOW TO PRODUCE MUSIC FROM HOME?

There seems to be a considerable amount of misconceptions surrounding the music-making process, so this blog will bring clarity and help you to understand the music production process altogether. The main motive for me to write this blog is to make you aware that music production is indeed a complicated process and it takes some level of musical knowledge and software proficiency to make it; however, it doesn’t require much hardware gear (which is presumed by a many people). So, let’s start and learn how to make music from home.

The things that you’ll need to make music:

  1. A laptop
  2. Headphones
  3. Some software

And that’s pretty much it. You can stay at your home and make music from scratch and trust me, it doesn’t take much time. For those who are newbies and would want to learn the audio manipulation or music production techniques and want to learn from home, you guys may join our Online Music Production course which is specifically created for those who wanted to learn music, but were not able to do so because of the pandemic and Covid-19 lockdown.

Now you can learn from your home via a computer and a good internet connection. That is all you’ll need to learn the art of music production. One thing is for sure, you would be able to make music easily by the end of this course. Now let’s look at the stages of music production, shall we?

STAGES OF MUSIC PRODUCTION:

Recording:

Although this could be done in a bedroom studio as well, there are some hardware requirements to record vocals or any instruments that you’d want to include in your music. Back in the early days of music reproduction, the music was made only by recording a couple of instruments or elements which were manipulated by the audio editing software later. But nowadays, we don’t really need to record all the instruments apart from just vocals. Thanks to the advancements in computer technology, companies started to invest more into software development and it is thriving unlike anything at present.

We made DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), which is basically a software that could be used to produce/record/edit/recreate music. How cool is that?

Back in the old days, the music composer had a dependency on other performing artists and recording studios to make any kind of music. An idea had to be conveyed to all the musicians or rather instrumentalists who would be performing that piece of music and recording it in the studio. The recording itself was a huge task back then because things were not digital but purely analogous. The workflow has drastically changed. The amount of time that is needed to invest into recording and producing has changed. Coming back to the point, the music-making process in the early days was very taxing on the artists and the composers, and also had a great degree of dependency when it came to relying on the performing artists.

Today, a single person has the capability to produce and emulate the same instruments that we used to record in the early days with the help of many, by using a computer software. This is the power of modern-day digital technology. You just need a good laptop or a machine where you can install a couple of software and start making music from scratch. And trust me when I say this, it is not difficult at all. The first step is to record vocals, and with the advent of digital tech, you can now record vocals even in your bedroom with some additional gears/equipment.

Music Production:

This is the part where we import the recorded instruments or vocals into a session of a DAW and start adding some MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) keys or chords, using different sounds by designing them and layering them, also adding some drums or percussions and layering them as well, and finally adding some effects. The complexity of the music production process could depend upon the knowledge and software proficiency one has. One can even sit at home and learn these softwares by going through different music production online courses for different DAWs. Our music production courses (online and offline) offers Ableton Live DAW training from start to finish.

We have also done a comparison video on the functionalities of different DAWs which will help/guide you to choose the best DAW for your field of interest. We also have an online course listed on our website https://www.loststoriesacademy.com/

The online course will be sufficient to help you start with the music production process. There is prejudice and preconceived notions or misconceptions about music production, some of them are as follows:

  1. Music production requires years of musical training
  2. A professional studio set up
  3. Music production requires proficiency in keyboard
  4. A lot of hardware gears which are very expensive

All the above misconceptions are what we are going to address today because oftentimes; this is a major concern for the parents when they visit our academy. And we love to bust all of the above myths. I’ll tell you to want are the prerequisites which you’ll need to make music:

  1. Music Production requires basic knowledge of music theory (which could be learned in a span of 1 to 2 months period)
  2. Music Production requires a good config laptop and a good pair of headphones
  3. Ear training (can be achieved in a matter of 15 to 20 days)

But that’s about it. All you need are the above-mentioned things, and if you have them, you can easily start producing music at your home without worrying about the hardware gear and equipment. If you’re willing to invest some more money into buying third-party plugins (these are the plugins that aren’t provided with the DAW but you can install and use them along with/instead of the native plugins) like Captain Chords and Melody Sauce, you wouldn’t even need to master music theory. You can start making catchy melodies without learning complex music theory. Also, learning music is like learning mathematics, and I am not talking about the complex mathematical equations. I am talking about the simplest form of mathematics, like counting on the third and fifth finger of your hand, which I believe even a five-year-old can do. Learning music is that simple.

Mixing:

This is the stage of music creation that requires a lot of technical expertise and hence it is advisable to outsource this work and get it done by someone who has the technical expertise to do so. Mixing is the process of balancing all the instruments or elements in your project to make your track sound cohesive and then processing them to make the most out of it. Making the most out of your elements doesn’t necessarily mean making it sound loud. It means that, there isn’t any kind of unwanted distortion, degradation or cluttering of sound when all the elements in the song are turned ON, and maximum fidelity is achieved.

In short, it is a complicated process, and also time-intensive to start with. So, if you want to learn how to improve your mixes; I would highly recommend our offline courses; which teaches you about getting into the nitty-gritty of mixing in much greater detail. If you understand the concepts of mixing, you have learned 90% of the music production process.

Mastering:

Mastering is the final stage of your track. This is to make your song compatible with the medium where you will be publishing your track. The mastering process is again a bit complicated, but after learning to mix thoroughly, understanding the mastering process is a piece of cake. It doesn’t require a lot of time, unlike mixing. You can even make the character of your track sound quite close to that of famous analog hardware without the use of expensive hardware gear and breaking your bank.

So, above mentioned are the things that you’ll need to make music from your home. If you want to record your vocals; then I highly recommend reading another blog that provides an in-depth explanation on how to get started with recording music at your home. If you already have a laptop and decent headphones, you can directly start with music production. All, you’ll need is DAW software, some third-party plugins and that’s it.

I hope that this blog provided you with useful insight in any way possible, I hope to see you in another one, thanks for reading. Do let us know if you have any queries regarding anything, we’ll be more than happy to help you. We will include a lot of different courses like Song Writing & Composition, Advanced Music Theories as well as Audio Engineering Guides.
